Teaching the Pre-School Child to Swim

The benefits of pre-school swimming are unique, uplifting and contribute to the positive development of the whole child. Through the soothing medium of water, we are able to tap into the child’s potential, both within and without.

Researchers have documented that the stimulating effect of early swimming lessons has the potential to increase intelligence, concentration, alertness, and perceptual abilities. Improvement in social, emotional and physical development has also been published. Of course, the manifestation of such inspired cognitive, personal and motor development takes time, patience and repetition. We have personally observed these phenomena and have confirmed this with other veteran instructors, especially in children who started lessons at a very early age, but it’s never too late to receive these unique and subtle benefits of pre-school swimming. These pre-school children eventually become extremely relaxed in the water.

Teaching the Basic Swimming Strokes

In order to teach swimming the instructor first needs to establish a trust relationship with the child. With this bond being established the next important step is to get the child comfortable with water in their face. It is impossible to learn to swim if you are not comfortable with water in your face and self-submersion of the face.

Before teaching a stroke we need to concentrate on a few basic elements of swimming. We have to decide which stroke we are going to teach first and why.

Advancing Stroke Work

The swimming school works through five phases during the stroke development of the swimmer, Pre-Competitive, Novice Level, Level Zero, Level One up to but not including Level Two.

The Pre-Competitive stage is the first step in teaching coordinated, safe and confident movement through water. The focal point is having fun learning the basic mechanics of freestyle and backstroke. Emphasis is placed on a step-by-step progression of drills. Swimmers must learn how to listen attentively to coaches and following stroke instruction. We do lots of kicking to build up aerobic conditioning and efficient technique; we introduce 2-3 basic drills for each stroke. When the coaches feel the group is ready, breaststroke and butterfly drills are introduced along with starts, turns and streamlining skills.
